DSOC 7600 - [Economy, Ecology and Limits: A Graduate Seminar in Environmental Sociology]

(crosslisted)
(also NTRES 7600 )
Spring. 3 credits.

Next offered 2014-2015.

C. Geisler, S. Wolf.

Graduate seminar on advanced sociology-of-environment themes. We focus analysis on contemporary socioecological transitions and their implications, theoretical and applied. Topics and instructors vary by year. We will lead a seminar on crisis and response applied to the ecological and institutional dimensions of sustainability. We will address coherence, pressures, states of emergency (crisis), collapse and/or restructuring as stages in a non-deterministic process of development/recovery. Our analysis will focus specific attention on levels of analysis and potential intervention ranging from local to global, and at the same time we will address the interplay of state, market and civil society in the construction of coherence, resilience and disorder. The seminar will be highly interactive and students will take responsibility for directing and leading analysis.
