ECE 4060 - Introduction to Quantum and Statistical Physics Fall. 4 credits.
Prerequisite or corequisite: PHYS 2214 , MATH 2940 , and ECE 3150 .
Staff.
Introductory quantum, statistical, and solidstate physics concepts necessary for understanding modern solid-state electronic and optical devices. Topics include the formalism and methods of quantum mechanics, structures of atoms, molecules, and solids and their interactions with electromagnetic waves, statistical physics, and the basic physics of semiconductor.
Outcome 1: The student can intuitively apply the duality in particle and wave natures in terms of wavelength and momentum, corresponding with the governing differential equation descriptions.
Outcome 2: The student can use the Schrödinger and the associate operators to describe the quantum problems in eigenvalue forms.
Outcome 3: The student can perform mathematical derivation in real and reciprocal space in single particle with piecewise potentials, simple harmonic oscillators, two-level systems, and hydrogen atoms
Outcome 4: The student can formulate the state occupation probabilities in quantum states, and apply them to Fermions and Bosons.
Outcome 5: The student can derive the quantum numbers in hydrogen atoms and apply them to the atomistic theory.
