ENGL 3610 - U.S. Literature: Early Poems, Novels, and Political Writing(crosslisted) (also AMST 3610 )(HB) (LA-AS) Spring. 4 credits.

This class will encourage students to develop critical skills interpreting literature that addresses contests over colonialism and nationalism in the early United States. Texts are by Benjamin Franklin, Phillis Wheatley, Thomas Jefferson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, and Nathaniel Hawthorne; we will also consider their contemporaries such as Judith Sargent Murray, Herman Melville, Charles Brockden Brown, Catherine Sedgwick, and Olaudah Equiano. Three short papers are required.
