J. Braddock.
This course will survey some of the significant themes and movements preoccupying twentieth-century fiction, such as such as the relation of technology to literary writing; the relationships among mass culture, folk culture, and elite culture; and arguments concerning ethnicity, immigration, and civil rights. We will proceed chronologically, with special units on three fictive civic spaces: Coney Island, the 1939 New York World’s Fair, and Las Vegas. Authors include Faulkner, Hurston, Cather, Fitzgerald, Stein, Hemingway, Ellison, Silko, and Nathanael West.
