Close analysis of the major forms of narrative, thematic, affective, rhetorical, and poetic structuring in film, as manifested in narrative, documentary, and personal film modes. Focus is also upon the relationship between cinematic structures and audience psychology, including the rhetorical register. Readings to include some of the following texts, among others: Bordwell’s Narration in the Fiction Film, Branigan’s Narrative Comprehension in Film, Morin’s Cinema or The Imaginary Man, Smith’s Film Structure and the Emotion System, and Plantinga’s Rhetoric and Representation in Nonfiction Film.
