MAE 3240 - Heat Transfer

Spring. (Also offered in summer through Engineering Cooperative Program) 3 credits.

Prerequisite: MAE 3230  or permission of instructor.

Staff.

Topics include the following: steady and unsteady heat conduction; forced and free convection; external and internal flows; radiation heat transfer; and heat exchangers.

Outcome 1: Learn the meaning of the terminology and physical principles of heat transfer.

Outcome 2: Develop a broad understanding of the basic modes of heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation) and become proficient at predicting heat transfer rates for these modes.

Outcome 3: Formulate an order of magnitude analysis on governing differential equations for heat transport to determine how variables are related to parameters.

Outcome 4: Compute radiative exchange between surfaces.

Outcome 5: Apply basic heat exchanger theory to predict heat exchanger performance for various designs.
