NS 3500 - Epidemiology in Context


Fall. 3 credits. Letter grades only.

Prerequisite: introductory statistics (e.g., PAM 2100 , AEM 2100 , ILRST 2100 ).

Provides the conceptual tools to critically analyze the controversies related to a wide range of contemporary health and social issues in the United States and global context. Basic principles of epidemiology are illustrated via case studies of nutritional and biomedical interventions, environmental toxins, and social issues.

Outcome 1: Be able to define and distinguish core concepts and principles of epidemiology.

Outcome 2: Be able to use these concepts and principles to critically analyze empirical studies, including the methods, findings and interpretations.

Outcome 3: Be able to explain why caution is needed in drawing conclusions from a single study and when applying them to individuals or populations other than those included in the study.
