PE 1162 - Salsa

Fall, spring. 1 credit.

Staff.

Salsa is arguably the world’s most popular social dance. This class covers beginner through intermediate Salsa moves as seen in nightclubs and social scenes throughout the world. Instruction emphasizes the development of Latin dance foundations in musical timing, rhythm, body movement, lead-follow connection, and space use. Students learn step variations and turn patterns in accord with these principles. Class begins with stretching and body movement warm-up. We then teach dance steps and movement patterns across the floor, in rotating lines, as freestyle, and in partner format. Dancing with live percussion at one or more of our classes will help connect the dots of timing, rhythm and motion. Basic Rueda de Casino is introduced later in the semester. Rueda is a form of Salsa dance where couples change partners within a circle and perform combinations to the arrangement of a caller. No partner is necessary to register. Couple sign-up is encouraged. Partners rotate. This class is gender-free. Each student is free to learn the lead or follow role.
