PHIL 3410 - Ethical Theory

(KCM-AS)
Spring. 4 credits.

K. Manne.

This course will examine questions at the intersection of metaethics and moral psychology having to do with the moral stance or attitude we might be thought to take to other people, as well as towards ourselves. We will consider P.F. Strawson’s suggestive but potentially slippery distinction between the interpersonal and the objective stances which he thought we can take to other people, from the second-person point of view. Among other discussions will be whether and how we should relate to certain non-human animals in an “I to thou” mode of some sort or other. Readings will include writings by Stephen Darwall, Christine Korsgaard, and Cora Diamond, as well as Strawson.
