PLPA 3290 - Medical and Veterinary Mycology

Introduction to fungi that cause human and animal disease. Lectures introduce topics including important fungi and the diseases they cause, which range from athlete’s foot to equine guttural pouch aspergillosis. We cover the ecology and epidemiology of animal pathogenic fungi, mycotoxins, mushroom poisoning, disease management, and clinical diagnosis.

Outcome 1: Develop a broad understanding of fungal disease in humans and other animals, including environmental reservoirs and vectors.

Outcome 2: Explain what makes fungal infections different from those caused by other infectious agents.

Outcome 3: Understand mycotoxins and mushroom toxins and how they differ from mycosis.

Outcome 4: Isolate fungi from indoor environments, and understand how they may be identified.

Outcome 5: Apply an understanding of fungal biology to predict impacts on humans and animals.
