A study of the simultaneous growth and growing-apart of the United States in the years from the end of the War of 1812 to the beginning of the Civil War. We will examine the political, social, economic, and cultural history of this era in order to understand why the United States became a vast, successful, transcontinental republic. We will also try the same history to understand why it simultaneously split apart and plunged into a civil war that would ultimately cost over 600,000 lives.
