PLBR 4093 - QTL Analysis: Mapping Genotype to Phenotype in Practice

Spring. 1 credit.

PLBR 4091 , PLBR 4092 , 4093 may be taken individually or in sequence in one semester.

E. Buckler, J-L. Jannink.

This course continues with an advanced discussion of mating designs and population development, as well as statistical models, to identify genetic loci that condition phenotypic variation and linked DNA polymorphisms that can be used to predict breeding and genotypic values. Engagement of real datasets will allow students to utilize information from the previous sections and develop a set of analytical and practical skills that are at the heart of modern plant breeding applications.

Outcome 1: In this course, students will learn to describe and explain factors that affect the success of analyses intended to identify genetic polymorphisms that cause changes in the phenotype.

Outcome 2: The students will learn to design experiments that can control some of these factors to increase the success of the experiments.

Outcome 3: The students will analyze real data-sets using current analysis packages and learn to apply these analyses to general data-sets.
