PLPA 6000 - Ecology of Plant Diseases in Natural Ecosystems


Spring. 1 credit. S-U grades only.

Junior, senior, or graduate-level standing required.

Discussion of the ecology, epidemiology, genetics, and evolution of plant diseases in forest, grassland, wetland, and other natural ecosystems. Weekly discussion of current research papers published in the primary scientific literature. Active participation in discussion and presentation of at least one paper required for course credit.

Outcome 1: Students will understand the impacts of plant diseases in forest, grassland, and wetland ecosystems.

Outcome 2: Students will understand the impact of climate change on plant disease ecology and evolution in natural ecosystems.

Outcome 3: Students will understand how plant diseases in agricultural and nonagricultural systems are connected.

Outcome 4: Students will understand the major research questions and approaches in plant disease ecology.

Outcome 5: Students will understand the basic ecological and evolutionary concepts informed by studies of plant disease ecology.
