ITAL 6710 - [Autonomia: Cinema, Literature, Art and Politics in and around Italy, c. 1962-1979]

This course, offered, in English, will be open to advanced undergraduates and graduates.  All works will be in translation, but reading knowledge of Italian, French, or another modern language is desirable.  While the focus of this course will be on constructions of space in Italy, we will also consider other European cultural contexts (such as France and Spain).  We will begin with a brief overview of social space in historical contexts, considering the piazza, the market, the church, the theater, the soccer field, burial grounds, monuments, parks and so on.  From there our focus will be on postwar period where we consider ways that space is configured and contested in various texts including literary works, art installations, paintings, and films from 1948 to the present.  We will also read works by architectural theorists, urban planners, political activists, factory owners and so on.  Students from various disciplines are welcome.
