Topic for spring 2014: The Arts of Conflict: Burgos, Granada and Toledo, 1200-1500

This co-taught seminar will explore the visual and literary cultures of medieval Iberia in the form of case studies considering three important capitals-Burgos, Toledo, and Granada-through the lens of conflict. Conflict between members of medieval Iberia’s much-touted “Three Religions” (Christianity, Judaism and Islam) will be at the forefront of much of the discussion, but we will also consider conflict between genres, social classes, genders, and other socially constructed groups, as well as methodologies and approaches, paying particular attention to the intersections of text, built environment and material culture. Students will participate in weekly discussions of readings, write response papers and give presentations related to semester research projects. A 20-25 pp. research paper will be due at the end of the semester.
