PHIL 3850 - Philosophy of Physics

Prerequisite: One Philosophy class (any level) or one Physics class at the level of PHYS 1101 , PHYS 1112  or PHYS 2207 , or by permission of the instructor. One previous course in calculus recommended.

An introduction to the philosophy and foundations of physics. Examination of conceptual problems in classical mechanics and special and general relativity, including: Zeno’s paradoxes of motion; the definition of instantaneous velocity; the truth of the physical laws; the question of determinism; the difference between space and time; the possibility of time travel; the existence and structure of spacetime. Consideration of the relation between physics and philosophy.
