GERST 6460 - [Hans Blumenberg: Metaphore, Myth, Paradigm](crosslisted) (also COML 6170 ) Spring. 4 credits.
Next offered 2014-2015.
P. Fleming.
This course carefully engages the work of the German philosopher and detective of ideas Hans Blumenberg. Still somewhat unknown in the English-speaking world, Blumenberg intervenes in debates critical to theoretical concerns over the past forty years. The seminar will proceed by imagining dialogues that never took place and creating constellations for re-considering both Blumenberg’s thought and that of his interlocutors. Paradigms for a Metaphorology, for example, will be read together with Ricoeur, Derrida, and DeMan; Work on Myth with Adorno and Horkheimer; The Genesis of the Copernican World with Benjamin, Kuhn, and Agamben; and Care Crosses the River with Heidegger.
