SPAN 3950 - [Contemporary Women Authors from Spain]

Staff.

We will provide students with familiarity with a selection of artworks by women authors from Spain, mainly (although not exclusively) writers and filmmakers, from 1980’s, 90’s, and 2000’s. Through our study, students will also explore some major topics in contemporary Spanish culture and society as seen through the eyes of these artists-issues of immigration, gender and sexuality, domestic violence, and historical memory, among others. Our viewing list includes Mercedes Alvarez’s El cielo gira, Iciar Bollain’s Flores de otro mundo, Isabel Coixet’s La vida secreta de las palabras, Laura Mana’s Sexo por compasion, and Josefina Molina’s Funcion de noche. Our reading list includes Maruja Torres’ Majer en querra, Luisa Castro’s Podria hacerte dano, Dulce Chacon’s La voz dormida, Adelaida Garcia morales El Sur, and Rosa Montero’s Paulo Pumilio.
