SPAN 3780 - [The Golden Age Comedia: A Global Vision of a Genre]

(HB) (LA-AS) Satisfies Option 1.
Spring. 4 credits.

Next offered 2015-2016. Conducted in Spanish.

E. Fernández.

Since the Spanish Renaissance, theater has been a mechanism for denunciation and no small amount of controversy.  Cervantes, in his Interludes, urges the public to rethink “society” using lenses of irony and laughter, while other Golden Age playwrights (e.g. Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, Vélez de Guevara, Calderón de la Barca, or María de Zayas) denounce a society blinded by its own sense of honor and fighting against the repression of gendered and political injustice.  Drawing upon this context, this seminar cultivates a global understanding of the Spanish comedia during the 16th and 17th centuries.  By closely analyzing these texts against renditions of Spanish dramatic masterpieces in their TV, film, and stage adaptations, we will analyze how these controversial plays help us understand the moral and aesthetic mediation of theatrical universality.
