Topics covered range from Chinese imperial and private collections through the ages, trade porcelains produced for Western collectors between the late 18th and 19th centuries, early 20th century Western collectors in China, to post World War II collection of Chinese art in the West. By focusing on these collections, students learn not only collection history, politics, aesthetics, economics, social agenda and concept of beauty, but also the strategies and formation of private and institutional collections. Each participant will conduct research on either a private or a public collection, and the symbiotic relationship between the two.
