PHIL 4330 - [Philosophy of Logic] Fall or spring. 4 credits.
Prerequisite: PHIL 2310 or PHIL 3310 and one other philosophy course, or permission of the instructor. Next offered 2014-2015.
Staff.
After an overview of the syntax of formal languages and of Natural Deduction (in the Prawitz format), this course will focus on truth and the (supposed) concept of truth. Some attention will be paid to the (supposed) sense/reference distinction, to the nature or concept-possession, to the relation(s) between truth and meaning, to semantic paradoxes and to the project of replacing the (supposed) “ordinary” concept of truth by an improved concept. Time permitting, we will also discuss logical constanthood, vagueness or the logic of plurals.
