HORT 4050 - Engaging Students in Science Learning

Prerequisite: EDUC 4040 ; admission to Cornell Teacher Education program or permission of instructor.

Important part of a sequence of courses and experiences intended to lead to excellence in science, agricultural science, and mathematics teaching. Prospective teachers develop understanding and skills in effective planning, instruction, and assessment of students studying agricultural science, mathematics, and science in middle and high school. The course is intended to integrate theory and practice associated with learning and teaching in school classroom settings and includes a minimum of 40 hours of fieldwork in area classrooms.

Outcome 1: Developing the knowledge, skills, and disposition of a reflective practice, collaborative action, and lifelong learning in teaching.

Outcome 2: Establish a personal philosophy as a professional instructor in middle/high school education.

Outcome 3: Develop understanding of how to integrate subject specific knowledge and the nature of learning to best meet the needs of students.

Outcome 4: Develop skills in communication, classroom management, and instructional assessment strategies for successful engagement in a secondary school setting.

Outcome 5: Develop appropriate unit and lesson plans that address national and state learning standards for specific topical areas of the sciences.

Outcome 6: Demonstrate competence in selecting and integrating appropriate technological tools into instruction.

Outcome 7: Becoming aware of major issues facing agriculture and science education today and carefully considering the implications of those issues into teaching.
