ROMS 6220 - [Memory Landscapes: Public Uses of the Past]

Spring. 4 credits.

Next offered 2015-2016. Co-meets with ROMS 4220 .

E. Traverso.

This course calls into question the public use of history. Far from being definitely “archived”, the past is permanently reactivated according to the sensibility, the worries, and the political convenience of the present. In the last decades, “memory” - an indefinite concept often used as a synonym of remembering, history, imagination or representation of the past - arose at the heart of the public sphere. The course will analyze many pieces of this intellectual debate (notably the works by Maurice Halbwachs, Pierre Nora, Paul Ricoeur, Josef H. Yerushalmi, and Jurgen Habermas, among others),connecting them with some classical European controversies about fashion, communism, colonialism, the Spanish Civil War, the Holocaust, the Algerian War, May 1968 in France…Thus, we will see how collective memories are interwoven with the writing of history and the policies pursued by both cultural industry and institutions (museums, commemorations and laws).
