This class will trace the image of the land (tierra/terra) in the literary and visual traditions of contemporary Brazil and Mexico. Literary and critical readings, photographic essays, and films will be organized following the notions of promise, projection and property to describe a constellation of images that gathers the history of the land in these two countries in a twentieth century. Juan Rulfo, Graciliano Ramon, José Revueltas, Clarice Lispector, Sebastiâo Salagado and Manuel Alvarez Bravo are some of the authors to be analyzed in this context. The students will have the opportunity to hone their critical and linguistics skills through discussion sessions, a series of short essays, presentations and a final longer essay. The readings, instruction and assignments will be in Spanish.
