SOC 6580 - [Gender in Global Capitalist Production]

Spring. 2 credits.

Next offered 2014-2015. This course will be taught every other week.

P. Sanyal.

Highlight the role of women in economic development and the globalization of world economies. This is an exceptionally important and timely topic given that women form a majority of the workforce powering the proliferation of global subcontracting in the manufacturing of goods and business processing outsourcing. This course spans historical and contemporary research on the topic conducted by economists, sociologists, and anthropologists and provides an interdisciplinary perspective on women’s labor in the context of globalization. It examines the changing gender dynamics within households and workplaces and goes on to discuss theoretical approaches to measuring women’s work and conceptualizing women’s freedom. Many of the readings assigned for this course are classic works in the field, works which have changed the way in which policymakers value and measure women’s work.
