(crosslisted)
(also ENGL 2641 ) (LA-AS)
Spring. 3 credits.

C. Boyce Davies.

This course  provides students with the opportunity to read, analyze, discuss and relate Michelle Alexander’s timely and relevant work The New Jim Crow to ongoing issues of race and racialization. The historical context of Jim Crow in the United States serves as a backdrop; contemporary issues of racialization and incarceration an ongoing engagement. Michelle  Alexander provides a reprise of this concept to talk about the nature of the prison industrial complex and the related issues of incarceration and race as an ongoing human rights issue. We will read a variety of relevant essays and related texts and view a series of video documentaries which provide additional detail on this subject.
