ASRC 4330 - Race & Social Entrepreneurship, Environmental Justice and Urban Reform

(CA-AS)
Spring. 4 credits.

N. Rooks.

This seminar examines entrepreneurial approaches to addressing social inequality.  Focusing on education and environmental justice, we consider innovative responses that seek to make a meaningful social intervention in raced based social inequality. Drawing on theoretical and historical scholarship along with case studies, students will explore organizations and experiments that have sought to make an intervention. The seminar will also offer students the opportunity to conduct hands-on research assessing the feasibility of various approaches to solving social problems.  Our central purpose will be to understand the conditions under which attempts to move from critique to sustainable solutions succeed and fail.
