ARTH 6812 - Reading Chinese Painting: Development of Connoisseurship in the Postwar Era(crosslisted) (also ASIAN 6683 ) Fall. 4 credits.
Co-meets with ARTH 4812 /ASIAN 4483 .
A. Pan.
Connoisseurship in Chinese painting is fundamental to understanding how viewers distinguish a genuine painting from a forgery. The science of connoisseurship, however, has not been consistent throughout Chinese history. We chart the development of connoisseurship since the end of World War II, and offer students a chance to understand the establishment of current methodologies.
Students will visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art and view Chinese paintings in storage.
