ILRIC 6031 - Comparative Education and Development: Africa and Asia


Fall. (Seven weeks) 2 credits. Letter grades only.

Co-meets with ILRIC 4031 .

Comparative study of educational institutions in Africa and Asia (with special emphasis on math and science education) and of the effects of these institutions on economic development, growth, and equality of opportunity. The institutions studied include primary and secondary education, apprenticeship, and higher education. Data on the consequences of policies are presented and an effort made to understand how human resource policies and educational institutions have contributed to rapid growth in both poor and rich countries. Another focus is understanding the causes of the differences in achievement levels across nations.
