DSOC 4971 - CALS NYS Internship Program Independent Study


Fall. 1 credits. Letter grades only.

Enrollment is limited to CALS students who participated in the CALS NYS Internship Program the preceding summer.

Following completion of the CALS NYS Internship Program 10-week summer internship, students must complete a one-credit course of independent study: DSOC 4201. (Enrollment in this course is limited to students accepted into internship program). Students will complete a research and analysis paper, and a professional-quality display poster. The focus of the paper and poster will be the internship host organization, the specific projects the intern worked on at the host organization, the greater socio-demographic and economic community context where the host organization is located, and the linkages between the host organization and greater community area from a community and economic development perspective.

Outcome 1: Evaluate and asses Community Development indicators via the Community Capitals Framework.

Outcome 2: Develop new skills and learn new on-line tools for accessing, interpreting and analyze sectorial data to develop organizational profile.

Outcome 3: Access, interpret, and analyze socio-demographic data about host community. Create community profile.

Outcome 4: Integrate all gathered data into one broad regional profile. Link data to host-community project with focus on attracting and retaining young professionals to region. This information will set stage for internship and host-community project.
