MUSIC 3123 - Beyond Orchestration: New Approaches to Instrumental Writing

(LA-AS)

Spring. 4 credits. Letter grades only.

P. Fahey.

A hands-on, seminar-style course exploring new and innovative approaches to instrumental writing. The course will be taught through a series of informal lectures, instrumental workshops (with a focus on extended techniques), discussion of students’ own work (original compositions and assignments), guest composer presentations, and one-on-one meetings with the course instructor; this will be combined with close listening and reading of scores by composers such as Pierluigi Billone, Beat Furrer, Helmut Lachenmann, Salvatore Sciarrino, and others. The course is designed for students with some previous experience composing or writing for instruments.
