ART 6003 - Cultural Identity, Political Agency, Post-Colonialism and Globalization


Fall. 3 credits. Letter grades only.

This seminar will examine the relation between art and social critique as well as the multiplicity and cultural specificity of modernisms and contemporary art in a global context. Topics may include the “Culture Wars” of the 80’s, artistic mobilization against AIDS and the legacies and recent practices of feminism, LGBT and queer activism, black, indigenous and minority critique. Also addressed are histories of colonialism and anti-imperialism, critiques of Eurocentrism and of primitivist, orientalist and exotic notions of the binary between the west and its other, as well as the economic, social and cultural facets of globalization and the emergence of recent institutional developments including the proliferation of museums, biennials and other platforms that render legibility to international art practice. Readings include texts from postcolonial theory and curatorial programs.
