GERST 4030 - [Writing America Post 9/11]

(crosslisted) COML 4030 , ENGL 4060 , GOVT 4105
(CA-AS)
Next offered 2017-2018. 4 credits.

P. Gilgen.

In this course, we will address a number of literary, philosophical, and political engagements with the events of 9/11. In addition to American theoretical, historical, and literary responses, we will examine how Europeans (Derrida, Enzensberger, Habermas, Pinter, Zizek et al.) see their role in a changed world and how they judge American foreign policy and the role of the UN. A significant part of the course will focus on the role that literature (including genres such as song lyrics, experimental poetry, comics, the essay, and the novel) has played in the retrospective shaping of the historical events. The course is aimed at advanced undergraduate students with research skills in cultural studies, history, or political science.
