ENGL 4470 - [Fictional Worlds in the Nineteenth Century British Novel]

Next offered 2018-2019. 4 credits. Student option grading.

H. Shaw.

Why do so many people read book after book and view film after film about Harry Potter?  One answer would be that they want to continue engaging with a set of memorable characters.  As they respond to the twists and turns of a new plot, their fictional world becomes increasingly rich and complex.  This can also occur in single novels, helped by their length and, for their first readers, by appearing in installments.  We will read Dickens’s Little Dorrit and George Eliot’s Middlemarch, as well as Wuthering Heights.  Though the first two novels are long, the syllabus is designed to give you time to enjoy them.  They are among most rewarding of Nineteenth Century British novels.
