EDUC 4720 - [Philosophy of Education]

Spring. 3 credits. Letter grades only (no audit).

Introduces students to the central questions of philosophy of education: What is the role of schooling in society? How does one become “educated?” How do educators foster ethical relations? Students develop responses to these questions by looking at the writings of prominent philosophers in the 20th century who have interrogated pedagogy, equity, curriculum, and the teacher-student relation. Under each of these topics, students similarly probe how recent writings in philosophy of education take up issues of gender, diversity, and citizenship.

Outcome 1: Explain, evaluate and effectively interpret factual claims, theories and assumptions in the student’s discipline(s).

Outcome 2: Find, access, critically evaluate, and ethically use information.

Outcome 3: Communicate effectively through writing, speech and visual information.

Outcome 4: Respectfully articulate the views of people with diverse perspectives.

Outcome 5: Demonstrate the capability to work both independently and in cooperation with others.
