ANTHR 7451 - Time and Temporality

Spring. 4 credits. Letter grades only.

Co-meets with ANTHR 4451 .

L. Ramberg.

The concept of historical progress of mankind (sic) cannot be sundered from the concept of its progression through a homogeneous, empty time. - Walter Benjamin

Queer theory and postcolonial thought have each posed challenges to the conception of time as ‘homogenous’ and ‘empty’ in Benjamin’s terms.  In this seminar we will consider points of critical convergence and divergence between these fields and work to diagnose the temporality of abstract labor, capital, and colonialism in relation to that of sexual development and maturity.  How might thinking with and through temporality help us specify the conditions of late modernity?  How might it help us fashion models of and for analysis, critique, ethnographic attention, and reparation?
