BEE 4891 - Social Entrepreneurship for Engineers

Spring. 1 credit. Letter grades only.

Prerequisite: BEE 4890. Co-meets with BEE 6891.

Extension of the fall course BEE 4890. In the followup course we focus on the most pressing need to implement a social entrepreneurship project that was begun in the fall course. The expected outcome in the fall course is a full business plan for a targeted city in Chile (current country focus) that implements an aquaponics business within one of the SOS Children’s Villages. Continued efforts are made in the spring to implement the startup project.

Outcome 1: Students will apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to define and solve problems in social entrepreneurship.

Outcome 2: Students will demonstrate improved ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs.

Outcome 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams.

Outcome 4: Students will improve their ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.

Outcome 5: Students will demonstrate an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.

Outcome 6: Students will demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively.

Outcome 7: Within the scope of the course, students will improve their capacity to predict and optimize the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context.
