BEE 4570 - Biorobotics

Spring. 3 credits. Letter grades only.

Prerequisite: Differential Equation (MATH 2930 ), Linear Algebra (MATH 2940 ). Strongly recommended prerequisite: Thermodynamics (BEE 2220  or ENGRD 2210 ), or permission of instructor.

S. Hamada.

Introduction to bio-inspired and bio-enabled robotics across scales by an interdisciplinary approach, by gradually integrating knowledge in mechanical engineering and bioengineering. First, the concept and basic principles of biorobotics are discussed through macroscale robots in various fields including agriculture such as fruit picking robots. Next, biorobots at meso and microscales are described by applying an analogy of elements introduced at macroscale. Finally, the design framework and examples of nanorobots enabled by bionanoengineering are discussed. Homework includes programming, literature searches, and design studies of their own biorobots.

Outcome 1: Students will demonstrate improved ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs (ABET c).

Outcome 2: Students will improve their ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems (ABET e).

Outcome 3: Students will display competence in oral and written communication (ABET g).

Outcome 4: Students will improve their capacity to integrate modern biology with engineering principles (ABET l-b).
