NS 4410 - Nutrition and Disease


     
Fall. 4 credits. Student option grading.

Prerequisite: NS 3200  or equivalent (can be taken concurrently with permission of the instructor). Recommended Prerequisite: NS 1150 .  

L. Barre.

Principles of nutrition, biochemistry, physiology, genetics, pathology, and pharmacology are combined to understand disease risk, prevention, progression, and management. Interactive lectures provide opportunities for the class to engage in the discussion of original research articles on topics of high current interest in the area of nutrition and health. Weekly in-class group case studies allow for practice of application of knowledge to clinical cases.

Outcome 1: Show a working knowledge of the pathophysiology, and altered metabolism, that occurs in various disease states.

Outcome 2: Identify targets for disease prevention and/or treatment and provide the rationale for the selection.

Outcome 3: Recognize and define key terms that are integral to understanding disease pathology, risk, and progression.

Outcome 4: Know and understand the rationale for nutritional strategies aimed at health promotion, disease prevention and/or treatment.
