MAE 4651 - Biofluid Mechanics

Spring. 4 credits. Letter grades only.

Prerequisite: ENGRD 2020  and MAE 3230  or equivalents, or permission of instructor. Enrollment limited to: ME senior standing. Fulfills ME Senior Design requirement. Co-meets with MAE 4650 /MAE 5650 . Senior Design report required.

A. Singh.

The transport of energy, mass, and momentum is essential to the function of living systems. Changes in these processes often underlie pathological conditions. This course covers the understanding and analysis of micro-macroscopic fluid flow phenomena within the human body and the relation between fluid flow and physiological processes. The topics covered in this course span from cellular level to organs under healthy and diseased conditions.

Outcome 1: Introduce and practice the use of the fundamental engineering principles and mathematical basis of fluid mechanics in human body.

Outcome 2: Enable the students to identify the fluid flow and transport in human body, and to formulate the governing conservation equations, and solve basic engineering biofluidic problems.

Outcome 3: Understand and correctly identify modeling assumptions used to solve various biofluidic problems.

Outcome 4: Enable the students to analyze if Biofluid mechanics a cause or an outcome of a disease and where the analysis might involve approximations and empirical approaches; for example, arterial flows and boundary layer flows.

Outcome 5: Encourage students to formulate an ordered approach to problem solving towards designing an alternative system to circumvent disease.

Outcome 6: Integrate and interpret biological data and mechanical engineering concepts.
