ASIAN 1109 - FWS: Who’s Afraid of Translation?

Spring. 3 credits. Letter grades only.

First-Year Writing Seminar.

P. McQuade.

The translator is a traitor - so the old saying goes. But who does a translator betray? What is at stake in the act of translation, especially in globalized and virtual spaces? This course is designed for students with no pre-existing knowledge of translation or a second language to approach these questions. Students can expect to look at literature and film that portrays translation as an intercultural activity, such as Lost in Translation, as well as treatises on translation as a political act, such as Christopher Whyte’s “Against Self-Translation.” Assignments will cover genres such as personal essay, textual and film analysis, and op-ed column writing. No previous knowledge of the topic and no language requirements are necessary to take this course.
