Through guided reading in Chinese, this course explores topics, themes and techniques that define a type of narrative work known as chuanqi (stories of the marvelous), which were written by Tang dynasty literati on the subject of love, romance, and betrayal. The aim of the course is to help students achieve an appreciation for the early development of a Chinese tradition of romance in the context of Tang literary and popular culture. (LL)
