DSOC 4300 - Human Migration: Theories, Patterns, and Trends

(SBA-AG) (CU-SBY)
Spring. 3 credits. Letter grades only.

Co-meets with DSOC 6300 .

L. Williams.

This course analyzes the determinants and consequences of internal and international migration in ‘developed’ and ‘developing’ nations. Readings assess both motivations for migration and its consequences for individuals, families, communities, and nations.  Public policy implications of the volume and composition of migration at both origin and destination are examined. Techniques to adequately measure migration flows and impacts are discussed.

Outcome 1: Discuss historical and contemporary trends and patterns of internal and international migration.

Outcome 2: Analyze the assumptions and conceptual frameworks that shape and motivate research on these topics.

Outcome 3: Demonstrate an understanding of the methods used to conduct research on these topics.

Outcome 4: Identify a research question, conduct a thorough review of the literature, analyze data where appropriate, and synthesize the knowledge accumulated through that process and throughout the course in a final paper.
