L. Beaman.

This studio will examine modes of cultural, spatial, and material disruption through design practices, products and narratives. Over the course of one semester we will participate in a series of design competitions that will serve as frameworks for generating transformative design interventions. Operating at various scales and across scopes, this studio posits that design is the act of creating speculative futures which are both environmentally and socially equitable, and which work to challenge normative modes of design practice, and production.

Outcome 1: To utilize collaborative design strategies to engage social and environmental equity through design proposition, and speculative futures which generate just and inclusive built environments.

Outcome 2: To explore and investigate existing conditions and operative systems; demonstrate conceptual and material clarity in each stage of the design process; and to create design responses that create both positive and effective change.

Outcome 3: To deploy graphic techniques of visualization to create narrative structures which communicate to a diverse audience, while also situating your work in a larger intellectual context by consciously and critically engaging with both theoretical and practical issues and influences in design.
