ENGL 4030 - Poetry in Process (crosslisted) AMST 4030 (ALC-AS, LA-AS) Fall or Spring. 4 credits. Student option grading.
This course counts toward the 4000-level seminar, Literatures of the Americas, and post-1800 requirements for English majors.
R. Gilbert.
Like all of us, poets change over time. In this course we’ll track the shifting visions and styles of three major American poets. Rather than reading each poet separately, we’ll move back and forth among them, comparing the phases of their careers, charting their formal and stylistic innovations, and exploring the lines of influence that connect them. For 2023-2024, the class will focus on three Cornellians: A.R. Ammons, Alice Fulton, and Ishion Hutchinson. Ammons taught at Cornell from 1964 to 1998, Fulton received her MFA from Cornell in 1982 and later joined the faculty (retiring in 2020), and Hutchinson joined the faculty in 2012.
