Topics to be considered include: the impact of Christianity on the functions and appearance of art and the emergence of distinctly Christian architectural types; the concepts of “classicism” and “abstraction” and their utility in understanding stylistic change in late antiquity; and the development of monumental vaulted architecture from the Markets of Trajan to the Hagia Sophia.
