Taught as a seminar, the course engages recent theoretical literature on the relations between religion, colonialism and nation formation. Such approaches draw on multi-media archives and examine multiple and competing discursive spaces within which the past, present, and future of political collectives are imagined. This seminar pays special attention to how the history of religions and religious discourses in South and Southeast Asia are drawn into claims made about national identities and national belonging.
