BIOMI 2500 - Public Health Microbiology

Fall. 3 credits. Student option grading.

Forbidden Overlap: due to an overlap in content, students will not receive credit for both BIOMI 2500 and BIOMI 2600 .
Prerequisite: the equivalent of two semesters of majors-level biology and one semester general chemistry.

This course will use a variety of teaching methods (including historical and current case studies and databases) to help students understand basic principles of microbiology as they apply to the emergence, transmission, pathogenicity, and control of infectious human disease. Major topics include water and food borne disease, zoonotic diseases, sexually transmitted diseases and antibiotic resistance.

Outcome 1: Describe and apply investigative methods to studies in public health microbiology.

Outcome 2: Explain core concepts in microbiology (including the basic characteristics of viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoa) as they relate to public health issues.

Outcome 3: Compare and contrast models of infectious disease with respect to pathogens, reservoirs, modes of transmission and control.

Outcome 4: Analyze the social, economic, and cultural challenges to protecting the public by preventing infectious disease.
