The Department of Computer Science is part of the Faculty of Computing and Information Science (CIS). It offers CS majors in the Colleges of Arts & Sciences and Engineering, and it has graduate programs for the degrees of Master of Engineering and Ph.D. The department is considered one of the top five CS departments in the U.S., with world-class research covering all of computer science.

The Department was organized in 1965 and is one of the oldest departments of its kind in the country. It has a full-time faculty of 52, approximately 200 resident Ph.D. graduate students, 120 M.Eng. students, and the undergraduate program graduates about 400 CS majors each year.
