Theory and Criticism, Art History/Visual Studies, and Diversity and Inclusion Course Lists


Approved Theory and Criticism Electives


The following courses have been approved to satisfy the theory and criticism elective requirement*:

*Note: B.F.A. students may petition to have other university courses applied toward the Theory and Criticism requirement. Petitions must include a course syllabus and the course(s) must primarily be involved in analyzing and evaluating the cultural and artistic considerations of the work of art. Artworks can be objects, films, electronic or digital works and more.

Modern/Contemporary Art History Courses


Modern art comprises a number of art movements from the 1860’s to the 1970’s.  Many artists during this time period produced works of art that rearticulated or rejected the traditional historical styles preceding it to embrace experimentation practically or technically.

Contemporary art is art that has produced during the latter part of the twentieth century, after 1970 though the twenty-first century.  Much of the work embraces culturally global ideas, materials, methods, or conceptual underpinnings.

The following courses* have been approved to satisfy the B.F.A. Modern/Contemporary Art History requirement:

Global/Underrepresented Art History Courses


The following courses have been approved to satisfy the B.F.A. Global/Underrepresented Art History requirement*:

Approved Art History/Visual Studies Electives


The following courses have been approved to satisfy the art history elective requirement*:

  • All History of Art (ARTH) courses at the 3000-level and above

Approved Diversity and Inclusion Electives


B.F.A. students may choose from the list below or a wide array of courses across the university that promote understanding, accepting, and valuing differences between people of different races, ethnicities, genders, ages, religions, disabilities, sexual orientations or other difference. 

Because course offerings that explore issues related to diversity, equity, social justice, and inclusion vary by semester, B.F.A. students can petition to have a class added to the approved list of electives. Students are encouraged to review the Class Roster, including the Society for the Humanities roster, which may include new D&I related offerings. Please include a syllabus with your petition, and if approved, the course will be added to the list of approved electives. Please get prior approval before you take the course.
